The first turbine was created by a Greek philosopher and mathematician by the name of Heron of Alexandria in 50 CE. His invention was a steam engine toy named the aeolipile. It was composed of a cauldron of heated water which produced enough steam to pressurize a sphere with two opposing directional steam escape nozzles. When there was enough steam pressure inside the sphere the steam escaped from the nozzles at high speed which created thrust, thus spinning the sphere. However, because it was a toy people didn't take it seriously, and therefore didn't realize its full potential.
The first useful steam engine was called the Chimney Jack, and was invented in the 1500s by Leonardo da Vinci. Eventually, the patent for the first true gas turbine went to John Barber in 1791.
The invention of the gas turbine did not change average people's lives much at first, but it has had a very major long term effect.
The gas turbine has profoundly affected the transportation industry. The gas turbine invented by John Barber was meant to be used in a horseless carriage, in other words a car. The first successful gas turbine was made by Aegidius Elling in 1903. Today gas turbines have many different uses, from refining oil to powering naval vessels.
